Installations: Indoor + Outdoor
Story is at the heart of my work and is what inspires me and gives meaning to what I create. Mythologically speaking the world is not made of atoms but is made of stories and these stories are what keep the world going. These stories are like storehouses holding important and essential things we keep forgetting. At times when we have forgotten about what is essential and have lost our way, the way back is through story and by sharing our stories we build community.
WALKING IN BALANCE
In this body of work the focus is on building awareness and activism around issues of abrupt climate change, ecosystem degradation,
endangered species and on creating visual stories that remind us of the beauty of creation and our connection to the web of life.
My conviction is that art can be a powerful vehicle to engender conversations centering on the impact human habitation is having on the planet and our place in the Universe as a caretaker species. I am interested in collaborating on projects that explore the spaces where art and the climate crisis intersect, and how we as artists can produce work that causes less damage to the environment. This desire has resulted in creating temporary ephemeral public art installations and collaborative work using as many up-cycled materials as possible. Sometimes using organic materials such as bird seed. The central task of employing re-purposed and single-use objects, in the art work, addresses the fate of their existence to the well-being of the planet. "What you see is what you get", Where there is smoke there's fire", We've made our beds...", "Disposable beauty", "We can't sand bag our way out of this", titles of the art works send a poignant message asking us to reflect upon our lifestyles and the impact they are having on the world around us. The first 20 images represent pieces that are the results of a collaboration with artist Gillian Theis. We worked side by side on this project over a number of months.
